Etchings.

Soft ground etchings on zinc plates, processed with aquatint.
Project Overview
As a traditionally trained artist, often the desired textures and methods can only be achieved through rudimental processes.
The Gauntlet.
Etching does not afford for the same control that digital illustration does. There are many steps that have to be made to prepare a plate before the etching process is even undertaken; polishing, bevelling edges, degreasing and finally rolling the soft ground onto the plate.
Contemporary depiction of Set.
These prints were inspired by an effort to create imagery that was reminiscent of totem prints that were made in ancient times depicting gods and goddesses. Drawing from Egyptian mythology, these prints depict contemporary manifestations of the trinity that is Heru, Isis and Set.

The tonal composition was hard to envision and even more challenging to exact. Having digital versions of the print to aid the process, both helped and hindered the my perception of a "successful" print. Initially, wanting to replicate the exact same results, this was quickly deemed unrealistic and allowing the process of etching to not be prejudiced by other preconceptions gave clarity towards seeing the print in its true form. This form could then be used to merge the digital and traditional, adding colours to make a whole new piece.
